How much money do you need to have to start investing?

There’s a huge misconception that you need to have a lot of money to invest. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Investing is a method to build your wealth, and it’s a fantastic tool for low-income earners and high-income earners alike!

You absolutely need to have an Emergency Fund built up before you start investing. However, once you’re ready to start putting money towards investments, many platforms today have no minimums. You can start investing with quite literally $1. 

There are a few different types of investing platforms, including ones that will do all of the work for you, and ones that require you to do some or all of the work. We’ll dive more into investing platforms options later, but the fees and minimums do vary quite a bit. 

In general though, many of the newer online platforms have no account minimums, while the platforms offered through Canadian banks tend to have an account minimum, or they’ll charge you a fee until you reach the minimum.
